When Overwhelm Becomes Burnout!
Sometimes life can quietly become too much.
What does it mean to cope? It can be getting through the day, replying to messages, working, caring for others and doing what needs to be done... but underneath it all, you feel exhausted.
Overwhelm can show up as:-
- Feeling emotionally drained.
- Struggling to concentrate.
- Feeling anxious or irritable.
- Wanting to withdraw from people.
- Feeling guilty for needing rest.
- Finding everyday tasks harder than before.
If this carries on too long, it can lead to burnout.
Burnout is so much more than simply being tired. It's carrying a large load for so long that it's feeling emotionally flat, you don't find the joy you once did, you feel overwhelmed by small things, and you're unable to keep the pace you previously did.
For many neurodivergent individuals, burnout can come from constantly masking, trying to meet expectations or sensory overload that feels so exhausting.
So often, people keep going because they feel they have to. They push their own needs to one side, ignore the signs and push through the exhaustion. Needing rest does not make you weak, and needing support does not mean you are failing.
Sometimes the most kindness we can give ourselves is a therapeutic space to pause long enough to explore what is weighing you down, space to listen to what our mind and body may be trying to tell us.
